AFL Round 14 Review: Welcome to Dullsville

Just a quick round review from me this week – once again, time has got the best of me this weekend!

A pretty dull round of footy to be perfectly honest. The standout being the Saints win over the Cats – but the rest were really ordinary games of footy.

The Hawks climbed back to the top of the ladder – a familiar sight now, and yet, I still don’t think they’re as good as they have been. The Cats faltered once again after being labelled premiership favourites, beaten by an exciting Saints side, while the Giants were back to their silky best. The Crows marched on, the Dockers remembered how to tank, and North slid out of the top 4 for the first time this season.

Wasteful Crows 12.28.100 def
Slipping Shinboners 10.7.67
Good: Crows midfield
Bad: Crows goalkicking
Two Sentence Summary: The Crows extended their winning streak to 5 with an at times sloppy performance which kept the Kangaroos in the contest longer than they deserved to be. North once again lost to a top 8 side – their 4th in a row – as their slide down the ladder continues.

Spud Firrito counting how many losses North have had in a row.

Marauding Magpies 12.13.85 def
Deadbeat Dockers 5.7.37
Good: Not much actually. Treloar and Pendlebury I suppose.
Bad: The weather, and the attendance. Just 20K at the G for a Collingwood home game. Also, Fremantle’s kicking.
Two Sentence Summary: A comfortable win for the Magpies, as Freo slid back into 1990’s away game form to post their 5th lowest score in history. The Pies raced out of the blocks to hold a 40 point lead at half time, and the game petered out from there.

Big Cat Tigers 17.15.117 def
Pussyish Lions 11.9.75
Good: Dustin Martin – Brownlow medal form?
Bad: Brisbane’s on-off effort switch.
Two Sentence Summary: Not exactly a game for the ages, as Dustin Martin’s class was about the only bright spot in an otherwise dull, uninteresting game of football. Teenage Tiger Connor Menadue and his Lions counterpart Eric Hipwood both had pretty good games for their sides, in proof that the future for these sides won’t be completely bleak.

Is that a Brownlow medalist with that football?

Enormous Giants 18.19.127 def
Battling Blues 9.11.65
Good: Stevie J. Vintage.
Bad: Carlton’s contested ball and stoppages
Two Sentence Summary: Bryce Gibbs played his 200th game, and appropriately – Carlton got belted, this time by a rampant Giants outfit who move back into the top 4. It’s probably an obvious thing to say, but the talent that the GWS have at their disposal is absolutely incredible – young stars all over the park.

Super Saints 14.9.93 def
Cold Cats 13.12.90
Good: Who doesn’t love a good old fashioned win by an underdog?
Bad: Geelong’s consistency (or lack thereof) Steven Motlop’s last quarter.
Two Sentence Summary: The Saints posted their first win against the Cats since 2010 with a thrilling victory at Etihad on Saturday night. The Cats squandered a few chances to steal the win in the last quarter, but take nothing away from an outstanding Saints side who continue to develop and play very watchable football.

Neenish Tart Hawks 12.14.86 def
Settling Suns 8.12.60
Good: Very little to be perfectly honest. Ablett’s supercoach score maybe?
Bad: Hawthorn’s jumper. Surely, surely – they could have done better than that.
Two Sentence Summary: In a dour, boring game of footy – the Hawks left it til late to kick away from the Gold Coast, whose results are improving thanks to a more defensive, loss aversion style of game. The Hawks recaptured top spot on the ladder with their 5th win in a row, to prove that anyone who wants to win the flag is going to have to go through them to do so.

Surely…

Next Week:
Eagles v Bombers, Power v Tigers, Suns v Saints, Swans v Dogs, Blues v Pies, Demons v Crows
Bye: Roos, Lions, Cats, Giants, Dockers, Hawks
