Round 13 Review: The No Free Kick to Lindsay Thomas Edition

The first of the bye rounds is in the books, we have a new ladder leader, and a couple of teams found a bit out about themselves, as the season enters its back half.

North came back to earth with their third win in four weeks – Brad Scott gave us some of his best post match, this time making an absurd claim that Lindsay Thomas doesn’t get free kicks. Well, I suppose the roof was closed, so he couldn’t complain about that… anyhow – North came out and tried to prove they could hang with the big boys, but all their bluff and bluster came to nought, as the Hawks put yet another pretender back in their box.

The Eagles went up to the Gabba and gave the Lions yet another kicking. They weren’t great – but they got the job done. Brisbane fans are now becoming proficient in the art of booing their own team, but at least no journalist asked Leppa if he was getting the lemonade and sars this week.

Port Adelaide went over to Perth and got beaten by a rapidly improving Fremantle team, who seem to have forgotten how to properly tank, with a third win in succession. Goodbye Sam Petrevski-Seton. The news after this one was the David Koch twitter spray to the Power players. It would have been bigger news had it not been from a fake twitter account.

The Cats gave the Dogs a good old fashioned flogging. Despite the scoring shots been 20 to 18, the Cats got up by almost 10 goals, lifting them to the top of the ladder, and sending the Dogs down to 6th. Oh yeah, Patrick Freaking Dangerfield (henceforth to be known as PFD) dominated again. No player has ever won the Brownlow and the Norm Smith in the same year… just throwing that out there.

The Swans played yet another game in a deluge – this time the Dees came to play on a soaked SCG. Except they sort of didn’t. Just 4 goals to Melbourne, as the Swans claimed the WORLD RECORD tackle count with 155 and belted the Demons by 55 points.

The final game of the round was a lot closer than anybody predicted. Jon Ralph may be leading the Herald Sun tipping contest, but he may be guilty of being an egregious smart arse, tipping the Giants to win by 187 points. Last week, I raised the question of GWS being a chance to win the flag. This week – I’m saying nope to that question. Not this year. They don’t have the ruthless streak needed to win the big one. That said – the Bombers put in their best performance for the year – it’s just a shame only 15,000 people showed up to see it.

Hardened Hawks 14.9.93 def
Naughty North 11.18.84
Good: Young James Sicily, Seeing Brad Scott whinge.
Bad: Jack Ziebell’s hit on Sam Mitchell – even if he does have a punchable face.
Two Sentence Summary: North again failed to prove the doubters wrong as they lost their third match in four weeks. The Hawks are somehow just quietly going about their business – almost under the radar; not bad for a side that has won the last three flags.

Scrappy Eagles 20.11.131 def
Brisbane Boo Boys 12.10.82
Good: West Coast’s forwards
Bad: Brisbane’s style of play.
Two Sentence Summary: West Coast did no more than they needed to. Brisbane are worse than Essendon – but don’t have 12 missing players to blame.

Daring Dockers 12.14.86 def
Poor Port 9.15.69
Good: Michael Barlow still being in my supercoach team.
Bad: Faux Twitter accounts – so last year.
Two Sentence Summary: The Dockers kicked away in the last quarter to win a topsy-turvy match, meaning the Power now slip two wins behind 8th spot. Pavlich, Barlow, and Neale were good for the Dockers.

Cats 16.4.100 def
Dogs 5.13.43
Good: PFD, Joel Selwood, Geelong’s pressure
Bad: Dogs goalkicking,
Two Sentence Summary: Geelong moved to the top of the ladder with a comprehensive win over the Bulldogs. The Dogs were never in the hunt, and the Cats are again starting to look like premiership contenders.

Swimming Swans 12.14.86 def
Drowning Demons 4.7.31
Good: Sydney’s pressure
Bad: Sydney’s weather
Two Sentence Summary: The Swans broke the league record for most tackles as they out worked and out pressured Melbourne all over the ground. The Dees never really looked like winning but kept the Swans honest for three quarters before Sydney kicked away at the end.

Gee We Survived 17.15.117 def
Better Bombers 12.18.90
Good: GWS little blokes. Orazio Fantasia. TIPPA!™ was back.
Bad: Umpiring. As usual on a Sunday twilight match.
Two Sentence Summary: A much improved Essendon gave the Giants a run for their money, leading for much of the match. The Giants ran the game out better though, and kicked 10 goals to 3 after half time.
PATTONWATCH: 14 possessions, 8 marks, 1 goal. Again better than Cameron, and again spent some time in defence. Has never kicked more than 3 in a match according to David King.

Next Week:
Crows v North, Pies v Dockers, Tigers v Lions, Giants v Blues, Saints v Cats, Hawks v Suns
BYE: Power, Dogs, Eagles, Swans, Bombers, Demons
